The Alabama football program was able to right the ship this season, winning eleven straight and finding themselves once again in the College Football Playoff. Their future looked bleak during the season’s early going, tied with the USF Bulls at halftime with a 1-1 record and quarterback Jalen Milroe on the bench.
However, Milroe returned to his starting gig a week later, played like a Heisman Trophy-caliber quarterback to end the season, and beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship. Milroe had his doubters, especially after a rough start to the season. Still, the signal-caller revealed on Thursday, when talking to the media ahead of the Rose Bowl, that his doubters date back to his earlier days with the Crimson Tide. Milroe pointed out that former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was one of the doubters.

Alabama Crimson Tide QB Jalen Milroe: Reveals Shocking Truth About Early Days in Tuscaloosa
Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe spoke to the media on Thursday, revealing a shocking story surrounding former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. When Pressed, Milroe said, “My offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, told me I shouldn’t play quarterback.”
Milroe came to Tuscaloosa in 2021 as a four-star prospect, per 247Sports. However, Alabama offensive Coordinator Bill O’Brien, who joined the Crimson Tide that same season, believed Milroe was suited for a different position.
Milroe continued, saying, “How would you feel if I told you you suck? He told me a bunch of positions I could have switched to, but look where I’m at right now. So who gets the last laugh?”
Milroe threw for 2,718 yards and 23 scores against six picks during his first season starting in 2023. He also rushed for 368 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading the Alabama football program to the College Football Playoff. The six-foot-two signal caller posted two touchdowns in his team’s massive win over the then-undefeated Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship. Meanwhile, O’Brien left Alabama after the 2022 season, becoming the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. The Patriots have averaged 14.1 points per game this season, the lowest mark in the NFL.
Alabama Football: Playing in College Football Playoff
The Alabama Crimson Tide will battle the undefeated Michigan Wolverines in the College Football Playoff semifinals. The two juggernauts will clash at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with Michigan being a short favorite. The Wolverines made the CFP during the past two seasons but lost in the semifinals both times. Meanwhile, Alabama is no stranger to the CFP. They have won their last six appearances in the semifinals while winning the College Football Playoff National Championship three times since its inception.
