This season, the Alabama football team lost two games before November for the first time since 2007. The Alabama Crimson Tide also lost three games this season, their most in nearly two decades. However, despite losses against unranked Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, Alabama won against Georgia, Missouri, South Carolina, and LSU during their first year in the post-Nick Saban era. With the expansion of the College Football Playoff to 12 teams, Alabama remains alive for Selection Sunday this upcoming weekend.
Alabama football will be off this weekend, as they did not qualify for the SEC Championship and sit 11th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. Alabama ranks highest among the eight three-loss teams in the CFP Top 25. Per one Alabama beat writer, the ACC title game will play a significant role in the SEC team’s chances to earn a CFP bid for the second consecutive season and fourth time in five years.
Alabama Football Eyeing ACC Title Game
According to Nick Kelly of @aldotcom
Alabama’s chances to make playoffs per Allstate playoff predictor with a …
SMU win: 99.7%
Clemson win: 72%
On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff committee decided to place Alabama football, with three losses, over the Miami Hurricanes, with two losses. Neither team will play in their respective conference championship games this weekend, meaning Alabama should best them in this Sunday’s final reveal. Miami lost in an upset fashion on the road against Syracuse last Saturday, opening the door for Clemson and SMU to battle in the ACC Championship.
Per Kelly, an SMU win against Clemson would virtually lock up a playoff berth for Alabama football. SMU, the current eighth seed in the CFP rankings, would end the 17th-seeded Clemson Tigers CFP hopes. However, a Clemson win would earn them the auto-bid, meaning if SMU stayed in the top 12, they could potentially knock off Alabama for the final spot. A Clemson win and a little drop-off from SMU could end Alabama’s journey toward a 19th national title.
