One of the biggest NFL storylines has been the San Francisco 49ers signing quarterback Brock Purdy to a five-year $265 million extension. The news of this deal came out on Friday.

There have been mixed reactions to the 49ers making this surprising move. Purdy had one-year remaining on his contract entering the 2025 season. With him locked up for the next several seasons, there have been some people that have been critical of what San Francisco did.
NFL Analyst Criticizes the San Francisco 49ers Extending Quarterback Brock Purdy

Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports 1 has not been a fan of Purdy playing for the 49ers. San Francisco finished with a 6-11 record last season and were also in last place in the NFC West. This could potentially be a move that sets the 49ers back for several years after general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan doubling down on the quarterback. Cowherd said,
“I’m willing to pay $50-55 million a year to quarterbacks that lead their teams or are the offense… I think a lot of people can drive this 49ers car.”
Cowherd mentioned that Purdy should have received a contract like Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got rather than a Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) like contract. Purdy is more at the level of Mayfield than he is at Allen.
During the 2024 season with San Francisco, he completed 65.9% of his passes for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. A lot of the 49ers roster was not healthy last season, but Purdy did not play well either. He is only 25 years old, but the 49ers should have waited until after the 2025 season to give him a new contract extension and they made a huge mistake by giving him one instead despite almost winning a Super Bowl ring.
