The Super Bowl has always been known for having odd bets. Which team will win the coin toss? Will the first kickoff be a touchback? How long will the national anthem be? These are just some of the bets that are odd yet somewhat common.
This year there are a lot more odd bets, many more. Could this be because the game is being played in Las Vegas, the capital of sports betting in the United States? Or maybe it’s more related to the ease and access that users have to sporting apps. It seems like online betting has been around forever, but it was only six years ago that online betting apps became mainstream.
Below are just some of the more odd bets that are tough to believe are real. No, not all of these are brand new bets, but with 39% of the American population admitting to betting on sports (and let’s be honest, most will be betting on the Super Bowl as well), these bets are getting more attention than ever before.
5 of the Oddest Bets for Super Bowl LVIII
1. What Color Will the Gatorade Bath Be?
There are some conspiracy theories about this particular bet, and good for good reason. Betters can bet on what color the Gatorade bath will be. The best bet currently sits at Purple +275, after the Chiefs used purple last year in a surprise move. The conspiracy theory comes from the idea that Vegas essentially tells the team which color to use to maximize their profits.
This would be a really simple task to pull off, even toward the end of the game, where someone on the sideline could indicate to players which Gatorade jug to grab.
2. Will the Team That Wins the Coin Toss Win the Game?
In theory, the team that wins the toss should have a slight advantage in the game since they decide whether to put their offense or defense on the field first. Yet, the team that won the toss actually lost seven straight games from 2014 to 2022. Overall, teams are 25-31.
The weird part of this bet is that it isn’t attached to a specific team or player. Essentially, the bet could be on either team, just depending on who wins the coin toss.
3. Bets on Taylor Swift
There are quite a few bets on this, and it could once again be a bit of a conspiracy with some of them. One of them is whether she will be mentioned during the MVP speech. Again, it would be simple to have an agent or someone else tell the player to work it in or not. Think of it like the old “We’re going to Disneyland!” promo that many players used to do.
Other bets include whether Travis Kelce will propose to Taylor after the game, the number of times that the broadcast will show her, and whether she will be able to make it to the game in time following a concert in Japan the night before.
4. What Will Be the First Commerical?
Companies spend millions of dollars on ads during the Super Bowl, and getting the first ad is a big deal. The early odds have Drumstick and Uber Eats as getting the first commercial spot, with Uber Eats sitting at -195. This seems extremely high considering all the companies that will be running ads, but either people know something, or this is a huge potential money maker for Vegas.
5. Will There be a Doinked Field Goal?
The NFL is debuting ‘doink’ cameras that will be built into the field goalposts in the case of a field goal hitting the upright or a close-call kick. This new technology is making this bet much more popular. The odds are currently sitting at (+1250), making it a pretty high-stakes bet every time a field goal or extra point is kicked.
Other Super Bowl Bets
There are hundreds of other bets, including the following:
- The first iconic landmark of Vegas being shown
- Will a player score eight straight points (Octopus)
- Will a player get arrested or caught with a…. escort
- Jason Kelce is shirtless. Again, this seems like one that could be worked out to benefit Vegas.
- Will any players be caught in the casinos?
- What color of hat will the singer of the National Anthem have?
Most of these bets can be made even without any experience in sports. At the same time, many of them have zero strategy at all and are completely luck-based. So when you’re at your Super Bowl party and hear a random cheer or groan, you may know why.
Conclusion
This post wasn’t intended to invite anyone to bet or to lean towards a particular bet. But if you’re new to betting and want to try with something fun and completely random, the Super Bowl is the perfect time to try it out!
