For a second consecutive season, the New England Patriots will have a former Ohio State running back on their roster. The Patriots announced they cut an undrafted rookie linebacker to make the move.

The Patriots made headlines last offseason when they signed former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year deal. Elliott played well for the Patriots but decided to return to Dallas to play for the Cowboys this season after they parted ways with his replacement, Tony Pollard, in free agency.

Per a statement by the Patriots, the team released Jay Person, a linebacker who showed promise In college:
24, was signed by New England as a rookie free agent on June 6, 2024. He began his college career at Appalachian State in 2018 before transferring to Chattanooga. The 6-foot-2, 237-pounder, played in 51 games during his college career and finished with 233 total tackles, 26½ sacks, 6 passes defensed, 9 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. Last season at Chattanooga, he played in 12 games and registered 56 total tackles, 9½ sacks, 1 pass defensed and 3 forced fumbles.

With Person’s roster spot open, the Patriots signed former Ohio State running back turned linebacker Steele Chambers:
[Chambers] was originally signed by Detroit as a rookie free agent out of Ohio State on May 10, 2024. The 6-foot-1, 229-pounder, was released by Detroit on June 10, 2024. Chambers began his collegiate career as a running back before switching to linebacker in the fall of 2021. He started in 29 games at linebacker over the last three seasons. In 2023, he finished with a team-leading 41 solo tackles.
