Niner Noise’s Peter Panacy recently published a list of the 10 best quarterbacks in the history of the San Francisco 49ers. Of course, Joe Montana is No. 1 on that list, while Steve Young and John Brodie are second and third, respectively. Fourth on the list is YA Tittle, while Jeff Garcia is fifth overall.
Brock Purdy cracks San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks list
If you’re wondering where current 49ers QB Brock Purdy is on the list, he is at No. 8. Controversial quarterback Colin Kaepernick is sixth while Alex Smith is seventh.
“Garoppolo’s injuries led to Purdy breaking onto the scene late his rookie season where he beat Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first-ever start, becoming the only quarterback to do so when starting his first game. Since then, Purdy has helmed an offense that reached the NFC Championship twice, the Super Bowl once, earned Pro Bowl honors and was even in the final running for NFL MVP after his first full season as a starter. In addition to numerous other records and achievements, Purdy set a franchise record for passing yards in 2023 with 4,280 while also leading the NFL in passer rating (113.0). His star is on the ascent.”
Purdy is one of the best football stories today. Despite getting picked last in the 2022 NFL Draft by the 49ers, he found a way to not just stick around in the NFL but also steer San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance in 2024.
If Purdy, who passed for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions on 69.4 percent completion rate in the 2023 season, gets the Niners back to the Super Bowl and win the Vince Lombardi Trophy, expect him to be ranked much higher than where he is today on every all-time 49ers QB lists.
That could happen as soon as 2025, with the 49ers entering the 2024 NFL season still loaded with talent.
