It has been quite the whirlwind for the Los Angeles Rams over the past 3 years.
An Uplifting Past Year For Sean McVay’s Team
The LA Rams have managed quite the turnaround over the past 12 months. Despite rolling out an über young team filled with mid-round rookie and second year starters on both the offense and defense, the Rams managed to secure the 6th seed in the NFC with a strong 10-7 record, eventually falling by just 1 point to the Detroit Lions in a closely fought 24-23 Wild Card matchup.
Los Angeles managed to get stellar production from not one but two 3rd round rookie defensive lineman in Byron Young and Kobie Turner, who combined for a highly impressive 17 sacks. Whilst breakout 5th round pick, Puka Nacua, on the offensive side of the ball, established himself as a bona fide star in his debut season, amassing 105 receptions for 1,486 yards, both records for rookie receivers.
Los Angeles Rams Seriously Struggled Post Super Bowl Triumph
However, the outlook was not always quite this bright. A year after winning Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022, the team dealt with multiple injuries to former offensive and defensive players of the year, Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald en route to falling to a very disappointing 5-12 record, the worst ever for a defending Super Bowl champion.
McVay reportedly considered retirement at the conclusion of the 2022 season, after what was likely the low point of his career to date. And, in a heartfelt conversation with Chris Long on the “Green Light” podcast, the ‘Boy Wonder’ reveals his thoughts on his sole losing season as an NFL head coach, per Long.
Sean McVay explains why last season was so important to him as the Rams HC

Sean McVay Believes The 2022 Season Was His Most Rewarding As A Coach In The Face Of Adversity
Many coaches, nay – people, tend to shy away from talking about their most difficult moments – or when they do, prefer to address them with direct language, regurgitating the same few lines concerning accountability, not doing enough and vowing to be better.
It is rare, therefore, to really see a coach reflect publicly as thoughtfully as McVay, not only talking about their personal and professional shortcomings with such brutal honesty and aplomb, but expressing gratitude for those difficult moments to the extent that he considers it his “most rewarding season”.
If one polled the NFL, I imagine that few coaches would be able to share that view for their worst season, although, perhaps, having a Super Bowl ring and appeared in another allows one a little more truthfulness in regards to job security than your average head coach.
Regardless, a fascinating insight into the workings of one the league’s best coaches for an organization that has rapidly turned into one of the very NFL’s best over the past half decade and more.
