The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off consecutive Super Bowl wins, could be set for a relocation in the foreseeable future. On Tuesday, the Kansas House of Representatives made it more likely that Kansas City could move across state lines. In an 84 to 38 vote, the legislative body passed a Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) bond for the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, pushing a bill to the Senate that could relocate the two franchises from Missouri to Kansas.
The Chiefs have played in Kansas City, Missouri since 1963. Meanwhile, the Royals have played in the same city since 1969. The Star bond, with the monumental movement happening on Tuesday, could push these two storied franchises to another location for the first time in nearly six decades.
Kansas House of Representatives: Passes Bill to Lure Kansas City Chiefs Out of Missouri
The proposed bill passed on Tuesday in the Kansas House of Representatives covers 70% of stadium construction costs, while a minimum capital investment of $1 billion is needed. The bondholders will receive contributions through sales taxes on alcohol sales within the stadium district. The state’s revenue from sports gambling and lottery gaming would also go towards reimbursement.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly must sign the legislation if the Senate passes the STAR bill. Kelly has recently discussed the proposed legislation. “I’m impressed by the ‘full court press’ that’s being made to get these teams to consider moving across the river. It’s not something I’m going to invest a lot of energy in. I think this is something for the legislature to work through,” said Kelly.
With a move to Kansas, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals would receive millions in sales tax revenue. The bonds purchased would also help fund new stadiums on the Kansas side of the state’s metropolitan area, split by the Missouri border. As for the Chiefs, they would spend nearly $700 million in private reserves on a new stadium, per House Commerce Committee Chair Sean Tarwater. However, outspoken Republicans in the GOP-heavy Legislature continue to lobby for $1.23 billion in income and property tax cuts across the next three seasons before pushing for a courtship with the Chiefs.
Kansas City Chiefs: Eyeing First Ever Super Bowl Three-Peat
The Kansas City Chiefs could make NFL history next season with a Super Bowl win. Outside of the Green Bay Packers of the 1930s, no NFL team has ever won three straight titles. However, in Green Bay’s case, they won two NFL titles before capturing the league’s first-ever Super Bowl in 1933. Nine teams have won back-to-back Super Bowls, with the 1970s Miami Dolphins coming the closest. After losing their first Super Bowl appearance in 1971, Miami won it all in 1972 and 1973. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills went to four straight Super Bowls in the 1990s but failed to win any.
Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes will again lead Kansas City in 2024. The two-time All-Pro threw for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in a down season last year but threw six scores to only one pick in the previous postseason. Mahomes’ favorite weapon, tight end Travis Kelce, will also return next fall, although he filed to eclipse 1,000 yards last season for the first time since 2015.
