The Dallas Cowboys should be in the market for backup quarterback help after Trey Lance’s dismal preseason. Lance led the league in passing yards during the preseason but had a serious problem with turnovers this summer.
A former NFL quarterback thinks the Cowboys should be calling the Denver Broncos to inquire about former first-round quarterback Zach Wilson.
Trey Lance didn’t earn the QB2 job
The Cowboys traded for Lance last summer. Jerry Jones was hoping Lance could claim the QB2 job this season. The Cowboys needed insurance at quarterback for next season if Jones can’t extend Dak Prescott’s contract.
Lance finished the preseason going 73/113 passing for 662 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. He threw five interceptions in the Cowboys preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. That game left a sour taste in the Cowboys’ mouths before the regular season.
Zach Wilson to the Dallas Cowboys?
Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel suggested on X that the Cowboys should see what the Broncos want for Wilson:
[Wilson is] an immediate upgrade over Cooper Rush/Trey Lance and gives them some depth behind Dak (who has yet to sign). Sean Payton has been loving up Zach & wouldn’t be surprised if its to increase trade value.
Wilson is a low-risk, high-reward trade
Wilson didn’t have a prayer to earn the starting job in Denver this season. Sean Payton is giving the job to rookie Bo Nix. However, Wilson has reportedly shown plenty of arm talent with the Broncos this year, but he’s struggled to learn Payton’s offense in the few months he’s been with Denver.
Wilson shouldn’t cost the Cowboys too much. Earlier in the offseason, the Broncos traded a sixth-round pick to the New York Jets for Wilson and a seventh-round pick.
Wilson went 28/44 passing for 397 yards and three touchdowns in the preseason.
The Cowboys could swap a sixth-round pick for Wilson and see what he can do in Dallas under Mike McCarthy. They could even attempt to trade Lance to Denver for Wilson’s services.
