Veteran tight end Zach Ertz is now on his third NFL team, joining the Washington Commanders ahead of the 2024 season after stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals. Known for his reliable hands and veteran leadership, the 13-year pro has made an impact wherever he’s played — and Washington is no exception.

As he enters his second year with the Commanders, Ertz sat down with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams show Wednesday and opened up about what sets this franchise apart, particularly when it comes to head coach Dan Quinn.
“I would say Coach Quinn is probably the best coach I’ve been around in front of the team and being himself and bringing energy… and holding guys accountable at the same time,” Ertz shared. “I think he is a truly, truly a difference-maker in this league.”
Ertz continued, praising Quinn’s influence beyond just game days.
“I don’t know if you can say that about every single coach — that they’re a difference-maker with their team — but I think Coach Quinn truly elevates all of our performances, and not only on Sundays, but truly every day. And so for me, being around him in particular has really opened my eyes to how good he is.”

Last season, Ertz played all 17 games for the 12-5 Commanders, catching 66 passes for 654 yards and seven touchdowns, further solidifying his place among the NFL’s elite tight ends alongside Travis Kelce and George Kittle.
“This is gonna sound cliche”: Zach Ertz Urges Commanders to Stay Grounded
In a separate conversation with Doug Farrar on Friday, Ertz shifted focus to 2025 — and delivered a clear message to his teammates: last year’s success doesn’t guarantee anything this time around.
“I think, I expect — this is gonna sound cliche, this is gonna sound the old veteran answer — but I expect us to hopefully not to put any stock into our success last year,” Ertz said.

The veteran admitted that several wins in 2024 could’ve gone the other way, crediting some moments to luck or fortunate bounces. He stressed that maintaining focus and drive is essential if Washington wants to take the next step.
With expectations rising and a strong core in place, Ertz hopes the Commanders stay hungry — and chase more than just another playoff run.
