The Wyoming Cowboys won their home opener on Saturday afternoon against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The back and forth affair finished 40-37 in double overtime. After a bad showing last week at Illinois the Cowboys bounced back to improve to 1-1 on the young season. Tulsa fell to 0-1 after the loss.
Special Teams
Early in the third quarter Wyoming blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to give the Cowboys a 24-20 lead. Ryan Marquez got a hand on the punt and recovered it himself before scampering into the end zone.
Wyoming kicker John Hoyland went on a roller coaster ride of emotions as he hit a career-long 55-yard field goal to cut the Tulsa lead to 34-27 with 10:53 remaining. He later missed the potential game-winning 44-yard field goal with the score tied 34-34. The ball barely hit the top of the upright and bounced back into play
The teams traded field goals in the first overtime period before Hoyland was called on again to give Wyoming the lead 40-37 in the second overtime.
Tulsa kicker Zack Long then missed the game-tying field goal wide left.
Quarterback Play
Wyoming quarterback Andrew Peasley had a dismal performance last week, going 5/20 for only 30 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He received plenty of criticism as the Cowboys fell 38-6. Today he bounced back in a major way, as he finished 20/30 for 256 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The touchdown passes were both big plays; a 48 yarder to Will Pelissier and a 51-yard strike to Joshua Cobbs. Peasley also led way on the ground, totaling 45 yards on 10 carries.
Tulsa quarterback Davis Brin put up big numbers in the loss. The senior finished with 460 yards on 50 pass attempts and threw for three touchdowns.
Turnovers
On the first drive of the game Brin fumbled while being sacked. Easton Gibbs pounced on the ball in the end zone for a Wyoming touchdown.
