The Wisconsin football fans have been asking for a new face within the program to start for the offense moving forward.
The Badgers received news that starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke would indeed miss the season with a knee injury. The quarterback transferred into the program with his final year of eligibility, but will now have to apply for a redshirt to play next season.
With Van Dyke out for the season, backup quarterback Braedyn Locke has now been promoted to the starter for the remainder of the season. However, Locke played last season in a similar role for injured starter Tanner Mordecai. Some fans feel Locke has already shown what he can on the field, and now would like to see true freshman Mabrey Mettauer.
The 6-foot-4-inch quarterback signed on with the Wisconsin football program in the 2024 class as a three-star recruit.
Mettauer is a confident, strong-armed quarterback but has not had the repetitions or experience at the collegiate level the staff would like to see. With Van Dyke injured, Mettauer is likely now the backup and will receive more playing time in practice regardless.
@MabreyMettauer is the answer. He’s our long term future. No more patching with a QB, ride the horse you plan to ride and suit him up!

I agree there and hope he gets well soon. It’s time for you now and I hope @CoachFick steps in and puts you in there as I think you will be the next great QB at Wisconsin and what we need.

Some fans feel that Mettauer is the man for the future in the eyes of the Wisconsin football staff, which is why he should receive the keys to the program early.
Let Locke play the USC game, and bring Mabrey in against Purdon’t. That way Mettauer’s head doesn’t get screwed up by a first start blow out.

Other Wisconsin football fans feel Mettauer should start after the next game against #11 USC in California. Starting a true freshman away in one of the tougher college football environments seems like a serious recipe for disaster. Instead, the resolution would be to start Mettauer against the Purdue Boilermakers, who just allowed 66 points against a Notre Dame team that lost to NIU.
Could True Freshman Mabrey Mettauer Play For the Wisconsin Football Team This Season?
While the fans may want Mettauer to take over the starting quarterback duties, the Wisconsin staff on the other hand is not as confident.
Mettauer was the third-string quarterback before Van Dyke was injured and now will serve as the backup quarterback. The Badgers staff had an open quarterback competition early in the off-season, but quickly Mettauer was slotted into the third-string role.
If the Wisconsin Badgers staff was not confident enough to give Mettauer a chance to contend for a starting spot on the practice field, it seems unlikely he will see the playing field.
