Ohio State football is back on track following a 20-13 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday. After a narrow 21-17 win against the Nebraska Cornhuskers the week prior, Ohio State Buckeyes fans hesitated to believe the Big Ten power could go on the road and beat an undefeated Penn State squad. However, the Buckeyes held the Nittany Lions to just three points in the final three quarters and improved to 7-1 on the season.
Although Ohio State led most of the contest in University Park, Pennsylvania, not every Buckeyes loyalist saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Following a brutal second-quarter fumble turned touchback, ex-OSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy Award winner Troy Smith called for the benching of signal-caller Will Howard. Nevertheless, when the dust settled on the top-five tilt and Ohio State football emerged victorious, Smith doubled back on his comments regarding the program’s signal-caller.
Troy Smith Apologizes For Comments Suggesting Benching of QB
According to the Twitter of 2006 Heisman Trophy Award winner and Ohio State football legend Troy Smith:
I owe Will Howard an apology.
In a since-deleted tweet, Smith called for backup quarterback Julian Sayin to earn reps following an unexcusable fumble from starting passer Will Howard. Midway through the second quarter and with Ohio State football deep into Penn State territory, Howard took a designed run for a 13-yard touchdown while tip-toeing the sideline. However, after review, officials ruled that Howard fumbled before crossing the goal line, with the ball going out the side of the endzone for a touchback.
Earlier in the game, Howard also tossed a pick-six, leading to a ten-point Penn State lead. Following the interception and fumble, Howard responded well, completing multiple high-leverage passes in the second half while twice picking up a first down with his legs on the game’s final drive. Smith, who led the Big Ten twice in ratings during his OSU tenure, walked back his comments regarding Howard postgame. Howard finished the contest 16-of-24 for 182 yards, two touchdowns, and one pick while adding 24 rushing yards.
