The New York Jets have been habitual bottom feeders for over a decade now but the future seems to be bright in New York after they nailed the last two drafts. They are the popular pick around the league to have a breakout season after only winning 6 games in the last two seasons. It’s easy to see why the Jets are a dark horse pick to make the playoffs. They have the second year version of Zach Wilson, an overlooked backfield, an underrated receiving corps, and seem to have fixed the offensive line. The Jets should immediately field a top 10 defense with a vaunted defensive line and an improving secondary.
But It Won’t Be Enough for the Jets
However, the Jets still have issues they need to overcome to playoffs. One of the biggest issue with the Jets is they haven’t beat a divisional opponent in the last two seasons, only winning 6 games in that span. The Miami Dolphins are another breakout candidate coming into 2022. The Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots are both coming off playoff appearances last season, making it only harder for the Jets.
They have another issue with stopping the run and they didn’t improve that in the offseason. Yes, they have players in the secondary who can stop the run but if the linebackers can’t then they are likely to replicate last season, where they ranked 26th against the run. Jets fans still have concerns about Robert Saleh’s coaching ability including his time management and his play calling. Decision making is usually the difference between losing and winning in the NFL and if Saleh doesn’t improve as a coach, he may be on his way out of New York by midseason. Another issue was that Zach Wilson held onto the ball too long and this is something that can be fixed but it’s worth noting.
