Last season, Mike White got hot for a few games while Zach Wilson missed four games. He played pretty well during that stretch in relief but this preseason, he’s severely getting outplayed by another QB. That QB is Chris Streveler and he has been playing lights out this preseason. He has marched down the field and led the Jets offense into the end zone in games they didn’t plan to play him in. That is making the most of your opportunities and staying ready in case the team needs him to step on the field. White has failed to do that during the preseason, posting subpar passing numbers and has less yards per pass. He has also led the Jets to come from behind wins in back-to-back games. There is also chatter among Jets faithful that Streveler would be better served as Wilson’s backup.
Why Streveler could win the backup spot?
Streveler could be better served as the backup mainly due to his skillset, which mirrors Wilson’s skillset to an extent. He can pass efficiently and he can also scramble for yardage when counted on to do that. Robert Saleh has also praised Streveler’s performances, calling them “nearly perfect” in press conferences. White was already on thin ice entering training camp due to the Jets only wanting to keep him or ageless journeyman Joe Flacco. White has not helped his case with his play in a preseason where he could prove he’s a starter in the NFL. The problem with Streveler is that he has shown promise in two preseason games but nonetheless, he has proven why he should at least be QB3 on the Jets. However, he has made the most of this opportunity in the preseason so far, especially with this being his fourth NFL team in since November.
