With training camp starting the Bears best player is threatening a hold out. So what will the Bears do with Roquan Smith? It’s not like Smith sprung this on the Bears. Ryan Poles knew Roquan would want an extension they day he was hired and it’s been in the public eye since April . So what does that tell us?
Roquan wants top money
We all know Roquan Smith is one of the top linebackers in the league, and so does Smith and his agent. They are going to want top dollar. Here’s a list of the five highest paid off the ball linebackers in the league this Season. In case you don’t know what an off the ball linebackers is, it’s a linebacker that doesn’t play on the line of scrimmage. He only rushes the passer when blitzing.
Darius Leonard 19.70 million
Fred Warner 19.05 million
C.J Mosley 17.00 million
Zach Cunningham 14.50 million
Deion Jones 14.25 million
Comparing Roquan to this list tells me he’s going to want at least 18 million a year, but he’s probably asking for 20 which he deserves. Are the Bears willing to pay that? I can’t say for sure but I have an idea.
All part of the plan?
Ryan Poles knew this day was coming when he was hired. Is it possible he thought Smith would just play the season with no complaints? Highly unlikely. Smith has said the Bears have made offers but they weren’t even close. The Bears know the market and what Roquan should be paid. Why insult him? Here’s another thing to consider. Who was the first person Poles signed right away in free agency? Roquan Smith backup Nick Morrow. Or should I say Roquan Smith replacement.
That’s sure what it looks like to me. Ryan Poles anticipated this day and he plans to trade Smith. In my opinion. If he can get the right price for him I’m all for it. The sooner they make the decision the better though. If the Bears do keep him you want him in camp.
If traded what would the Bears get?
Well for starters a first round draft pick. If that’s not in the deal they are getting robbed. They may even be able to get two. Hell in this crazy NFL maybe three, but I doubt it. Realistically a first and maybe two seconds and a late rounder. Really it’s anybody’s guess. If they do trade Smith and he has played his last down as a Bear, thanks Roquan. You were awesome in your short time here.
