Veteran Quarterback Jacoby Brissett signed a one year deal with the Browns during this off season. His expected role was to be the backup to Deshaun Watson for the upcoming season. With the recent news of Watson’s suspension and the trade sending Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers. Jacoby Brissett is looking like he will start the season off as the Browns starting quarterback.
Former U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson has informed the parties involved in the disciplinary hearing that Watson should be suspended six games for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy. Roger Goodell and the NFL has the opportunity to appeal the decision.
This upcoming season will be Brissett’s 7th season in the league. He spent the majority of his time as a backup QB. Brissett has thrown for 7,742 passing yards with a 36-17 touchdown to interception ratio. Brissett’s last stint as a starting QB was with the Indianapolis Colts in 2019. That year the Colts finished 7-9 and missed out on the playoffs. Brissett threw for 2,942 passing yards and threw for 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
Cleveland Browns Schedule
The Cleveland Browns kick off their season in Carolina as they take on the Panthers. After the Panthers, the Browns head back home to take on the New York Jets. In Week three, the Browns face division rival Pittsburgh Steelers. After their game with the Steelers, the Browns head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons. The Browns come back to Cleveland for a two game home stint against tough opponents in the Los Angeles Charger and the New England Patriots. If the suspension stays at six games, Watson would return back in week seven to take on the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore.
The media spotlight on the Browns is greater than ever before. From the Deshaun Watson hearing to the turmoil between Baker Mayfield and the Front Office. Many eyes will be on the Browns to see if the trade and contract signing of Deshaun Watson was worth it and if Jacoby Brissett can lead the Browns while Watson is suspended.
