With the Patriots set to begin training camp on Wednesday, Bill Belichick held his first media availability of the summer on Tuesday morning. The one topic on everyone in New England’s mind is the progression of second-year quarterback Mac Jones. Based on Belichick’s comments Tuesday, Jones has made a strong impression on his legendary head coach.
Asked about Jones’s development, Belichick noted that the 23-year-old quarterback made “tremendous strides” during his first NFL offseason. He elaborated, adding that:
“He [Jones] did a great job last year, but he’s starting from a much, much higher point this year from where he started last year. His offseason work has been significant, and I think everyone recognizes how well he prepares and how much further along he was than a year ago.”
What a Difference a Year Can Make
This time last year, Jones entered camp as the presumed backup to former league MVP Cam Newton. However, Newton’s inconsistent play at training camp, coupled with a COVID absence, opened the door for Jones to emerge as the Patriots new starting quarterback. With Jones under center, the Patriots would go 10-7 in 2021, earning a Wild Card berth a year after missing the playoffs with Newton at quarterback. Jones was also selected to represent the AFC in the Pro Bowl.
Coming off his successful rookie season, Jones will now be responsible for shouldering more responsibility in his second year. After speculation all offseason, Belichick confirmed that the Patriots will not have an official offensive coordinator this season. With Josh McDaniels now in Las Vegas, Jones will need to show command of the offense this season without the guidance of an offensive coordinator. Belichick seems to think that Mac is up for the challenge.
