A college football bowl game ended following a controversial call on an interception return on Tuesday night. Fans online were upset that an epic comeback in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl ended with a questionable decision from the replay booth.
Led by interim head coach Chad Scott, West Virginia entered Tuesday night’s contest against the No. 25 Memphis Tigers playing for pride and a winning season in front of a crowd of 12,022 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The Tigers got off to hot a start, taking a 17-0 lead before WVU scored their first points.
Memphis football got off to a hot start
Memphis would extend their lead to 35-17 in the third quarter before the Mountaineers would begin their comeback, led by quarterback Garrett Greene throwing for 328 yards and two touchdowns. WVU would cut the lead to 42-37, and a missed field goal Tigers kicker Tristian Vanderberg would give the Mountaineers one more chance to score with 45 seconds remaining and the ball on the WVU 31-yard line.
WVU took the ball down to the Memphis 37-yard line before Greene was intercepted by linebacker Elijah Herring. A West Virginia player slapped the ball out of Herring’s hand as the linebacker was sliding, and WVU recovered the ball.
Officials initially ruled a recovery for the Mountaineers, which would have given them another chance to score with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter. However, after viewing the replay, officials ruled that because Herring was giving himself up by sliding, he was down before coughing up the ball.
Memphis ended the game on a kneel-down on the very next play.
College football fans thought West Virginia football was screwed
Fans on social media were not happy with the call, even though by the rulebook, the officials made the right call if they deemed he was giving himself. (A subjective call.)
Wow West Virginia just got ROBBED in broad daylight
Granting a defender a QB slide while he’s fumbling ?!?!
Insane game w/ an AWFUL ending due to more terrible NCAA officiating
S/o to Memphis for playing their tail off but can’t end a game like thatpic.twitter.com/4gRALBn8ss

“Literally a made up call lol,” wrote another.
“West va absolutely hosed,” suggested a fan.
“BS ending,” posted another.
Add a slide to the list of football plays that are apparently unclear.. at least to this fan,” wrote a fan.
With the win, Memphis improved to 11-2 on the season. West Virginia dropped to 6-7. The Mountaineers will have a new head coach on their sideline next fall after hiring Rich Rodriguez.
