As it seems I’ve said every week….its was another crazy week of college football. Big wins, surprising losses, etc…Lets get into the news!
How Many Undefeated Teams Are Left?
We seemed to have lost one this week. #4 Miami lost to Georgia Tech. Cam Ward plays solid overall, but their defense did almost nothing. Ward was also sacked with 1:48 left in the game down 28-23 and essentially fumbled the game away.
#8 Indiana is still undefeated after beating Michigan 20-15. Kurtis Rourke is not 100% after missing time with hand surgery. He was not his usual consistent self, but did enough. The defense was not able to take advantage if an iffy Michigan offensive line. Indiana has a big game this week coming up with #2 Ohio State.
#25 Army is undefeated after a win over North Texas. They won a low scoring effort by a score of 14-3. Chandler Morris the quarterback for North Texas did not play well throwing two picks and no touchdowns. Army won the same way they have been winning all season. Running the ball and sound defense. Army has a huge game this week against #10 Notre Dame.
#9 BYU is also still undefeated after a close 22-21 win over Utah. Brandon Rose came in and started his first game for Utah and played well for his first career start. He threw two touchdowns and also carried the ball 7 times for 55 yards. BYU scored one rushing touchdown, one kick returned for a touchdown and one passing touchdown. Retzlaff did not have a good game. They won on a 44 yard field goal with three seconds left.
Maryland tried to put up a fight against #1 Oregon, but lost 39-18. Despite throwing three touchdowns Dillon Gabriel was just ok. Noah Whittington and their defensive carried the day for them. Billy Edwards threw a couple bad picks for Maryland and their running game struggled. Oregon plays Wisconsin next who has been a little bit of a Jeckel and Hyde team this year.
Interesting Stories From The Weekend
#12 Boise State had a close win over Nevada 28-21. 34 carries, 209 yards and three touchdowns for Ashton Jeanty which means it was a day that ends in Y. He is up to 1,734 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns with three winnable games left.
Louisiana-Lafayete is 8-1 and not ranked. They just blew out Arkansas State 55-19. Their last three games are against South Alabama, Troy and Louisiana-Monroe. They should be able to win all three. If or when they do they deserve to be ranked.
#23 Clemson beat Virginia Tech 24-14. Cade Klubnik is back to playing like 2023 the last three weeks. Phil Mafah has been the one steering the offense the last few weeks. Kyron Drones was back after missing last week with an injury and Bhayshul Tuten is not 100% either. If both were the game might have gone differently.
#21 WSU won and is now 8-1. Mateer threw 4 TDs, but let the running game do most of the work. The offense ran for 303 yards. One of their last three games will be a challenge. They take on Oregon State in two weeks.
Two Losses In A Row?
After starting the season undefeated two schools have now both lost two games in a row. Pittsburgh lost 24-19 to a Virginia team that was 4-4 entering the game. Injuries and a ineffective passing game seemed to have done Pittsburgh in this game.
#17 Iowa State lost to Kansas, who was 2-6 coming into the game. Rocco Becht throws for almost 400 yards, but also threw a pick six to Mello Dotson. Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel combine for 25 targets, but just 15 catches. Iowa State didn’t have any sacks for takeaways on defense. Jalon Daniels had one of his best games of the season.
There Were Some Big Blow Out Games This Week
#5 Texas blew out Florida. 49-17. Florida was down to their #3 QB, so obviously the game was not going to go well for them. Quinn Ewers has his flash game. He threw five touchdowns and completed 70% of his passes. The Texas defensive picked off Florida twice.
Ohio State blew out Purdue 45-0. Hudson Card was back as the starter and did not play well. The Ohio State defense had four sacks and didn’t leave much running room for the Purdue running backs. Will Howard had a Will Howard game. He threw three touchdowns and no picks, but overall was ok.
#16 Mississippi beats up #3 Georgia 28-10. Just one pick for Carson Beck but he was sacked 5 times and had a big fumble. The Georgia running game is still having trouble. Dart didn’t go off, but gutted out a win after hurting his ankle early in the game and missing a couple drives. Their defense forces four fumbles, had one interception and five sacks. Ole Miss’ next two games are easily winnable. Georgia has a tough game against Tennessee this week.
South Carolina has seemingly figured something out having won their last three and their last two were against quality opponents. They beat Vanderbilt and Diego Pavia 28-7. That South Carolina defensive line is taking over some games. Vanderbilt rushed for just 108 yards as a team. Rocket Sanders has been going strong these last few weeks as well, rushing for 15 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns. LaNorris Sellers did his damage in the air this week, throwing two touchdowns. They have two big games coming up against Missouri and Clemson.
#7 Tennessee beat up Mississippi State 33-14. Nico Iamaleava was ok throwing two touchdowns, he let Dylan Sampson do the work. Sampson had 30 carries for 149 yards and one touchdown. Tennessee is in 1st place in the SEC right now. Their strong defensive line scored four sacks and nine tackles for a loss in the game.
#11 Alabama destroyed #15 LSU 42-13. Jalen Milroe rushed for 4 TDs and didn’t throw it a lot, just 12 completions. Garrett Nussmeier played poorly again. He threw two interceptions and was pretty inaccurate through most of the game. He should definitely return to school for 2025. Alabama’s defense also knocked him around a bit.
#6 Penn State has a get right win over Washington 35-6. They had over 250 rushing yards. 2 of the defensives five sacks came from Abdul Carter. He even got one off a ghost rush which you don’t see from a lot of college edge rushers. Washington couldn’t get anything going on offense and couldn’t stop much on defense. Jayden Reed had another INT. Penn State’s last three games are very winnable.
Some Schools Are Doing Poorly
Oklahoma is 5-5 after losing to Missouri. Brent Venables has to be on the hot seat at this point. QB issues, injuries, and no running game have been some of their biggest issues this season. Their defense has also been inconsistent.
Kent State is still winless, the only school in FBS that is winless. They haven’t won a game since September 16th….of last season. That is 18 straight losses. That program needs a complete reset.
