The New York Jets’ quarterback situation hit another boiling point on Sunday after head coach Aaron Glenn benched Justin Fields at halftime of a 13–6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The decision, which came with the Jets trailing by seven and struggling offensively, sparked immediate fan backlash and calls for a trade.
As Glenn explained postgame, “We needed a spark.”

Jets’ QB Chaos: Glenn Benches Justin Fields for Taylor as Winless Season Sparks Fan Fury

The Jets were unable to score a touchdown at the break of the second game. Fields received four sacks and lost 21 yards, but made 46 on 6-of-12. The fact that he was sacked on the final play to end the first half was a symbolism that represented an offence that had no rhythm, no protection and no answers.
Glenn explained that he made the call because he evaluated the energy and execution of his team. “As the head coach, you have to take a look at the team to see what is best for you to put yourself in position to go win the game,” he said. The staff agreed to insert veteran Tyrod Taylor in the third quarter.
Taylor’s performance didn’t shift the outcome. Taylor threw for 126 yards but completed under 50% of his passes and tossed two interceptions to Carolina corner Jaycee Horn. The Jets finished with just 172 total yards and six sacks allowed a glaring indictment of the offensive line. Glenn admitted, “It seemed like we lost a good bit of the one-on-ones, and that can’t happen.”
The head coach refused to name a starter for Week 8 against the Bengals, emphasizing the need for efficiency in the passing game. “We’re not getting the results that we want,” Glenn said, “but these players are not giving up at all.”
The Jets’ fanbase didn’t take the move quietly.
Many took to social media calling for drastic change, with one fan posting, “I think it’s time to trade for a QB.”
Another demanded, “Trade for Shedeur atp 😭.”
Shedeur Sanders may be a good fit in the Jets because of his qualities of being a fast decision maker and having the qualities of extending plays when the pressure is on, which New York so badly needs. Justin Fields, still has a problem with pocket sense, slow reads, and lack of frequency of accuracy behind a collapsing offensive line.
Others questioned Glenn’s consistency, recalling his earlier defense of Fields: “Didn’t he blast a reporter last week for asking if he would bench Fields???”
One fan summed up the sentiment: “Justin deserves better. And… now the Jets have a Quarterback controversy to add to the circus.”
With New York sitting winless at 0–7, the decision has ignited debate over the team’s direction and whether Glenn’s spark will bring clarity or further chaos to a season already on fire.
