Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day won his first national title with the program during the 2024 college football season. Ohio State was one of four teams from the BIG10 Conference to make the 12-team postseason field.

Along with the Buckeyes, the Oregon Ducks, the Penn State Nittany Lions, and the Indiana Hoosiers also made it to the playoffs. For the 2025 college football season, it will be a 12-team postseason field once again. However, for 2026 and beyond, there is a very good chance that it gets expanded to a 16-team postseason field. Some have argued that the SEC Conference and the BIG10 Conference should get at least four teams into the postseason field if they expand the playoffs after the 2025 college football season.

Day was interviewed by ESPN about the future of the college football playoffs model in determining potentially how many teams from each conference should make it. Well, the Buckeyes head coach defended the BIG10 Conference and said,

“We’re in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country. I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers.”

Before the 2024 college football season began, Oregon, the UCLA Bruins, the USC Trojans, and the Washington Huskies also joined the conference after separating from the Pac-12 Conference. There are now 18 teams in the BIG10 Conference. Day also said,

“You would have had at least a team or two [in the CFP] from out there. So it only makes sense when you have 18 teams, especially the quality of teams that you would have [in] that many teams representing the Big Ten.”

There is no doubt that the four teams from this conference who made it to the playoffs in 2024 will be in the mix again in 2025. The Michigan Wolverines and the Illinois Fighting Illini who also could have a case to make the college football playoffs from the BIG10 Conference for the 2025 season. It will be interesting to see how many teams the BIG10 Conference will have in the college football playoffs for 2025.

Ohio State and Michigan have won the last two national titles. There is no doubt that the Buckeyes will most likely be one of the 12 teams in the college football playoffs field once again in 2025. It doesn’t matter to Day which teams from the conference get in as long as his Buckeyes make the playoffs year in and year out.
