As the Deshaun Watson suspension saga churns toward the finish line, the two sides appear to be far apart. Reports have leaked that the NFL is looking to conclude its investigation and render a decision soon. The league is eyeing a “significant suspension”, while the NFL Players Association is gearing up for a goal-line stand.
Deshaun Watson’s Career
Watson played sparsely as a rookie, but went on to become one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the NFL over the next three seasons, throwing for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdowns against only 36 interceptions. The team a 21-10 record in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The following year went south for the Texans, finishing with a 4-12 record. But things were even worse for Watson, as he was hit with 24 civil and criminal lawsuits regarding “harassment and sexual misconduct.”
The Aftermath of the Deshaun Watson Allegations
When the suspension is announced, the NFLPA will surely be ready for an appeal. For starters, a Houston grand jury declined to indict Watson on criminal charges. NFLPA will surely portray these women as money-grubbing opportunists. Recently, Watson resolved 20 of the 24 lawsuits out-of-court, leaving just four unresolved. One could argue that Watson already sat out the entire 2021 season as punishment.
Houston eventually traded Watson to the Cleveland Browns, who promptly rewarded him with an all-time NFL record $320 million dollar fully guaranteed contract. The end-result suspension could range anywhere from indefinitely to nothing, considering time already served.
