Earlier in the offseason, the Washington Commanders traded away wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles. Washington is very thin at the wide receiver position for the 2024 season. Without Terry McLaurin, they do not have a reliable option on the roster.
One player who was released on Tuesday from the Kansas City Chiefs was wide receiver Kadarius Toney. The Commanders and other teams could look elsewhere for potential wide receiver help.
Tyler Sullivan Of CBS Sports Thinks That the Washington Commanders Should Sign Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney
Toney’s experiment with the Kansas City Chiefs did not go as well as planned. However, he did win two Super Bowl titles with them so it can’t all be that bad right? Well, Kadarius Toney did not play in the playoffs last season with the Chiefs. He was also a first-round selection by the New York Giants in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Florida.
The Giants traded him to the Chiefs and gave up on him quickly. There was a reason for it. Well, Toney is running out of chances to make it work in the NFL. Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports thinks that the Washington Commanders should sign him. Sullivan said:
“The Commanders just got rid of former first-round pick Jahan Dotson in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, and there are a decent amount of question marks behind Terry McLaurin at the receiver position. Toney’s talent could be enticing for this new Washington coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.”
Sullivan also added:
“When the Kansas City Chiefs traded for Toney in October of 2022, it momentarily felt like the former first-round wideout was going to be a lethal pairing with Patrick Mahomes. While Toney did have some key plays during his Chiefs tenure — and has two Super Bowl rings to show for it — he never reached the highs that most were anticipating he may. This summer, he fell behind in a revamped Chiefs receiver room and is now looking for a new team hoping to tap into his raw ability. “
Toney last season with the Kansas City Chiefs played in 13 games. He caught 27 passes for 169 yards receiving and one touchdown. Kadarius Toney averaged 6.3 yards per catch and was targeted 38 times. He has also had a history of dropping passes.
Commanders Not Deep At Wide Receiver
Outside of Terry McLaurin, Dyami Brown, and Luke McCaffrey will be two other wide receivers that will be relied upon for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Toney would be a massive risk for the Washington Commanders to take a chance on.
There are better options out there for Washington at the wide receiver position. Kadarius Toney is such a high risk.
