Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels will be the preseason starter against the New York Jets on Saturday, August 10. Daniels is also the number one quarterback on the Commanders depth chart entering the 2024 season.
It will not be long until head coach Dan Quinn officially names him as the Week 1 starter for the 2024 season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road. Daniels was the number two pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of LSU. He won the Heisman Trophy last season.
Jayden Daniels hopes to be the long-term franchise quarterback. It is a good thing that Daniels will be getting reps in the preseason. Number one overall pick quarterback Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears didn’t even play a snap in the Hall of Fame game against the Houston Texans. Williams could see live action later this preseason.
Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn Talks About Jayden Daniels
There are always debates about whether or not key players should be playing in the preseason before regular season games. Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn decided to start Jayden Daniels against the New York Jets. Quinn said to Nick Shook of nfl.com:
“He’s earned that right to do that. Through the course of all the practices, you’re keeping track of accuracy and completions and decisions of where it goes. It was really a byproduct of him really nailing those moments. Like I said, we’re just going through the whole process, but it’s good to see when there’s markers set, you get that one. Then you get to the next one and you get to the next one. The good news is Jayden and Brandon (Coleman) and Mike Sainristil and others, they’re the type of competitors that want to go after things. So for them, having some markers to go after, I think that’s a really good thing because that really suits their personality and their competitive nature, as well.”
It will be interesting to see how well Jayden Daniels looks in preseason action. How long will head coach Dan Quinn keep him on the field for against the New York Jets? Daniels is looking to develop chemistry with players like Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson in live-game action.
If Daniels can perform like he did last season with the LSU Tigers, he can very well win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in the NFL. He is going to be compared a lot to Caleb Williams this season.
