The Washington Commanders dropped their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road. Quarterback Jayden Daniels in his NFL debut showed signs of potential. As the second-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he is going to go through growing pains.
Outside of Terry McLaurin, he does not have much help at the wide receiver position. Against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Daniels completed 70.8% of his passes for 184 yards. He also rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns, along with averaging 5.5 yards per carry.
Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn Wants To Use His Running Backs More and Make Jayden Daniels Run Less
The Commanders signed Austin Ekeler in the offseason as a free agent. Ekeler played with the Los Angeles Chargers a season ago. They need to use him more in the offense and Brian Robinson Jr. could also be used more in the offense.
After the game on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn made a statement about rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Quinn said to the media:
“We’d love to see [Daniels] remain a passer first. I think it’s going to come with more experience, honestly. When I can go, extend it to throw it, when, ‘Hey, this play’s over, I’ll get rid of it, and move on to the next play. “So, I think you’ll see that trajectory continue as we go. Certainly, [16] carries is not the model that we’re looking for, certainly with Brian, and Austin, and others here. But, at the end of it, I do think we’ll continue to grow in that spot. But certainly not by design, to have that many.”
The Washington Commanders want to make sure that Jayden Daniels does not get hurt. This is what happened with Robert Griffin III during his rookie season when he ran with the football a lot.
Preparing For the New York Giants
There is no doubt that the Commanders and Daniels will get a lot of offensive opportunities on Sunday against the New York Giants. The Giants could have the worst offense in the NFL this season because of how poor quarterback Daniel Jones plays the position.
Daniels should have a decent day against the Giants and make some plays. The New York Giants fanbase will be envious of the Commanders having a potential franchise quarterback. However, we will see if the former LSU Tigers quarterback will take the advice of head coach Dan Quinn about running less with the football moving forward.
