The Washington Commanders enter the offseason with a need for a wide receiver, especially a veteran, to complement Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin and assist with Jayden Daniels’ development. Washington also needs help in this position because three of their top four leading wide receivers are set to hit free agency. Olamide Zaccheaus, Noah Brown, and Dyami Brown will enter free agency, and it’s unclear whether they will retain all three.
The Commanders made their first significant move of the offseason so far, acquiring a former All-Pro from the NFC West.
The Washington Commanders acquire All-Pro receiver from NFC Foe in 2025

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Commanders acquired Deebo Samuel from the 49ers for a 2025 fifth-round pick. Samuel enters the final year of his 3-year, $71,550,000 contract. As Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac points out, the Commanders essentially inherit a 1-year, $17.5 million non-guaranteed contract in 2025.

The former San Francisco 49ers All-Pro had a disappointing 2024 campaign

Deebo Samuel had a disappointing 2024 campaign, struggling with drops, with six, and excluding 2020 and 2022, had the fewest receptions, yards, touchdowns, yards per game, and catching percentage in his career. Samuel caught 51 passes on 81 targets for 670 yards, three touchdowns, 44.7 yards per game, and a 63.0% catching percentage in 15 games. He also rushed for 136 yards on 42 carries and one touchdown.
Samuel requested to be traded during his exit meeting with the San Francisco 49ers after the conclusion of the season. The 49ers granted his wish, and now he has a chance for a fresh start with the Washington Commanders. Will he make the most of the opportunity?
