The Washington Commanders enter the offseason with the fifth-most cap space in the league, $64.2 million to work. However, despite having the fifth-most cap space, this does not mean that Washington will not make any roster cuts since each team has at least one contract they would like to eliminate. Highlighting one Commanders player on the chopping block and who has a high cap hit is their Pro Bowl defensive lineman.
The Washington Commanders two-time Pro Bowl DT was on the chopping block

Jonathan Allen had a disappointing 2024 season, missing half of the season with an injury, and upon returning, was on a pitch count for the remainder of the year. Allen recorded 19 tackles, three TFLs, seven QB hits, and three sacks in eight regular season games and seven starts, along with six tackles, one TFL, and two QB hits in the postseason. He missed nine games (Weeks 7-16) with a partially torn pectoral muscle.

Allen enters the final year of his 4-year, $72 million contract. He is set to earn a $15.5 million base salary along with a $22.470 million cap hit in 2025. The Commanders attempted to trade the Pro Bowl defensive tackle to the 49ers as part of the Deebo Samuel trade, but it fell through, and they hoped to find a trade suitor instead of cutting him outright and receiving zero trade compensation.

Washington Commanders cut $72 million Pro Bowler

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Commanders have released Jonathan Allen, freeing up $16.47 million and incurring a $6 million dead cap hit in 2025. As Rapoport points out, the front office attempted to trade him but failed to because of his high cap hit, and him coming off a significant injury. Finally, with the release of Allen, they should have around $80 million in cap space.
