The Washington Commanders were sure they had a bonafide star on their hands when they drafted Chase Young. After winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year, he tore his ACL in the next season. He only played in three games in 2022. In those two years, it seems the team has soured on Young. The Washington Commanders have decided to not pick up the fifth-year option on Chase Young.

Washington Commanders Decline Fifth-Year Option Of Chase Young
What a fall from grace. After looking like the bedrock of the defense for years to come, Young now has to prove himself to get another contract. For most top picks, the second contract is a forgone conclusion especially one that wins Rookie of the Year. However, injuries are tough, especially ACL injuries. The team may be wanting to make sure that Young is the same player before handing out a massive deal. Washington is also in the middle of a team sale and may be waiting to hand out massive deals until the sale goes through.
End Of Time In Washington?
I wouldn’t say that this means Young is on his way out. Outside of one season, he hasn’t seen the field. I don’t blame the team for wanting to see a full season of Young before making a huge offer. I am a little surprised that a smaller extension couldn’t have been reached that would have factored in Young’s injury history while also admitting he is a talented player. Those conversations may have been happening but obviously, I am not in the room. This simply comes as a shock as Young was considered to be one of the premier talents in the league a couple of years ago.
Hopefully, Chase Young can bounce back and have a huge season. If he does, I would expect Washington to happily hand him a new contract.
