The Washington Commanders enter the 2024 season with a new coaching staff in place. Kliff Kingsbury returns to the NFL to be the Commanders’ offensive coordinator after serving as the USC Trojans offensive coordinator a season ago.
This was a good hire for Commanders head coach Dan Quinn. This is Quinn’s second stint as an NFL head coach. His first stint as an NFL head coach was with the Atlanta Falcons.
Pro Football Focus Questions Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury Entering the 2024 Season
There is no doubt that the Commanders’ offense will need to be better this season. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of LSU. Daniels hopes to be the savior of the franchise and it will depend on the relationship he has with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
Pro Football Focus’s John Kosko questions can Kliff Kingsbury adjust entering the 2024 season? Kosko said:
“After four years as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Kliff Kingsbury joined USC for a season before returning to the NFL as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator. In Arizona, Kingsbury’s offense often became predictable and lacked creativity, heavily relying on screens—nearly 17% of plays—and running 10 personnel (four wide receivers, no tight ends) over 17% of the time, a significant outlier.
During the preseason, Jayden Daniels dropped back 15 times and threw six screen passes. While it’s too early to draw firm conclusions, the question remains: Did Kingsbury’s season with Lincoln Riley add new dimensions to his playcalling, or will he continue with his established patterns?”
It will be interesting to see how well Daniels performs with Kingsbury. Quinn is going to let him run the show with the offense this season.
Kliff Kingsbury Has Worked With Mobile Quarterbacks In the Past
In the past, Kingsbury has worked with Patrick Mahomes with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals, and Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans. Williams is now with the Chicago Bears in the NFL after being the number one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
There will be no issue with the relationship between Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels. The biggest question will be can the Commanders score points? If he helps Daniels develop into a solid player, maybe he could get back into the NFL head coaching rankings.
