There are several athletes on this year’s watchlist, but not all universities, (or even most) are represented. This year, there were football players across 3 divisions. Qualifications for the Good Works team are listed on the AFCA Website.
“Each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing. ”
The key dates are for nominations on May 22, and then the selection for the nominations in July. Selection for the final 22 (11 from the FBS and 11 from other divisions) “Good Works Team” are made in September.
According to the Memphis Tigers official site, Ducksworth has been very involved, helping recruit people for Be The Match, a bone marrow drive. He has also been volunteering with LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. Duckworth also volunteered with the Madonna Learning Center, Read Across America, Sea Isle Elementary and the Holiday Heroes gift Wrapping Party. The organizations he volunteered for are linked to their donation pages if it is a nonprofit that accepts donations.
Ducksworth one of several Memphis Tigers nominated over the past several years. It’s even more exemplary that nominees over the past several years, have had to deal with fewer opportunities for volunteering. Like all of us, in-person activities have been curtailed.
The Memphis Tigers have had previous nominees for the AFCA award. Long snapper Preston Brady was nominated for the 30th AFCA awards in 2021, Akeem Davis was nominated in 2012 .
In 2013 Jacob Karam, Tiger quarterback, was named to the final team of 22 announced in September 2013, being recognized for his contributions to St. Jude and other charitable organizations.
