As NFL Sunday kicked off many teams have plenty of optimism entering the 2024 season. The Atlanta Falcons are certainly one of those teams with their new quarterback Kirk Cousins. However, Sunday was a day to forget for Atlanta.
It was not a day to forget for their team mascot though, as he entered the Guinness Book of World Records just before the game started.
Atlanta Falcons Mascot Pulls Off Historic Stunt
Freddie Falcon, the team’s mascot, pulled off an incredibly terrifying stunt to start the season off strong. The stunt actually was a world record as well.
While the team could not manage to entertain their fans for the entire game, the mascot did just the opposite. Atlanta hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers to open the Cousins era for the Falcons, and it started miserably.
Atlanta lost in a game in which they did not let up any touchdowns in an 18-10 loss. Cousins was only there for 155 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. While the Falcons will have some growing pains in their new era, and the Steelers’ defense is one of the best in the NFL, Cousins was not happy with the way week 1 played out:
“I was disappointed,” Cousins said postgame. “Certainly disappointed. You always go out there with an expectation that you’re going to play at a high level, and we didn’t play up to our standards today.”
While the game was a disappointment, the team’s mascot made history from the top of the stadium. Freddie pulled off the highest indoor rope swing in history to start the Falcons’ season off strong. While it did not have the effect that Freddie may have hoped for for the game, he is now a Guinness Book of World Records holder.

At least there was one member of the Falcons that were willing to go all out to start the season!
Atlanta will try to get in the win column next week, and it will certainly take a bit of time to put all of their pieces together. It did not help that they played one of the bets defenses in the league to start their campaign.
