Veteran NFL Defensive Back Jason McCourty has announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 seasons. McCourty had not signed a new deal after finishing his contract with the Dolphins. He played as a cornerback for the majority of his career until last year, playing as a Free Safety for the Dolphins. After playing 13 seasons Mccourty walks away from the game with one Super Bowl ring he won with the Patriots. Jason McCourty recorded 744 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 108 pass defenses, one sack, nine forced fumbles, five recoveries, 18 interceptions, and three defensive touchdowns.
College years
Jason started alongside his twin brother Devin McCourty at Rutgers University. He played 3 years for the Rutgers as a cornerback. During his 3 years he recorded 148 tackles, two interceptions and 20 pass defenses.
Jason McCourty is drafted by the Titans
In the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected Jason McCourty with the 203rd overall pick. McCourty would play eight seasons for the Titans recording 506 combined tackles, six forced fumbles, five recoveries with two touchdowns, 73 passes defended and 11 interceptions. In April of 2017 the Titans released McCourty after he refused a pay cut.
Cleveland Browns tenure
The Browns signed McCourty to a two-year deal in May of 2017. In 2017 McCourty would record 65 combined tackles, one fumble recovery, 12 passes defended and 2 interceptions. In March of 2018 the Browns traded McCourty to the New England Patriots.
Jason McCourty traded to the Patriots
The news of being traded to the Patriots wasn’t a bad thing at for McCourty. Not only did this remove him from a terrible team to a Super Bowl contender, it also put him on the same team as his twin brother. In his first year playing for the Patriots, McCourty helped lead them to a Super Bowl. During Super Bowl LIII, McCourty would defend a crucial would-be touchdown pass in the third quarter. This gained acknowledgment from Bill Belichick after the game as he called the play “Huge”. During the 2020 season both Jason and Devin were named team captains. In three seasons with the Patriots Jason recorded 152 combined tackles, one forced fumble, 19 passes defended and two interceptions. The Patriots did not renew Jason McCourty’s contract following the 2020 season.
Final playing year in Miami
The Dolphins signed McCourty to a contract in May of 2021. He would only get to play seven games as injuries sidelined him for the remainder of the year. In seven games he recorded 21 combined tackles and two passes defended. The Dolphins did not renew McCourty’s contract and he spent the majority of the off-season a Free-Agent. Jason McCourty officially announced his retirement today July 15, 2022.
