The Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran defensive end Carlos Dunlap to an $8 million dollar deal in their quest to find a solid pass rusher for the 2022 season.
The Breakdown of Dunlap
Dunlap was a second-round draft pick out of Florida in 2010 and played the majority of his 13-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals. As the 2020 season progressed, however, he had a desire to leave Cincinnati after less playing time. This is why 2020 and 2021 saw him play on the Seattle Seahawks. During his career, Dunlap has accumulated 539 total tackles, 96 sacks, 21 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and three touchdowns. He’s also a two-time Pro Bowler, making appearances in 2015 and 2016 while with the Bengals.
In 2021, Dunlap played in all 17 games for the Seahawks. During 2020, he only played in 8 games. Going back to 2021 for his final season in Seattle, he logged 8.5 sacks, 24 tackles with 8 for loss, and an overall 35 combined defensive tackles.
Other Offers Before KC
Carlos also expressed interest in the Carolina Panthers, taking a visit to them a few days ago before signing with Kansas City come today. It is worth suggesting Dunlap will potentially fill a similar role that Melvin Ingram played when he joined the Chiefs midway through last season. Dunlap is a worthy addition to Kansas City, as defensive end has been seen as one of the team’s primary weaknesses headed into 2022. Dunlap’s signing is one big move that many Chiefs fans have been waiting to see ever since free agency began in mid-March.
Dunlap is also a very durable player, having missed only 3 total games since 2013. His toughness is especially good considering he played part of 2021 with a nagging foot injury. Even though he was more a situational pass rusher than a starter, he was 7th among Seattle DLs in total snaps.
