With the 2022 season around the corner, national watchlists are forming around the country for college football’s most prestigious awards. Utah State features a quarterback on two of these watch lists.
The Maxwell Award is one of the most prestigious awards in college football. The award is given to the best college football player throughout the entire season.
Last year, the winner of the award was Bryce Young. Players who have won this award feature Joe Burrow, DeVonta Smith, Tua Tagovalioa, Baker Mayfield, and Lamar Jackson.
Utah State quarterback, Logan Bonner, is a name being watched for the Maxwell Award. He is also on the watchlist for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s best quarterback.
Utah State Quarterback on Maxwell Award Watchlist
In 2021, Bonner threw for over 3,200 yards with 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He will be looking to lead Utah State to back-to-back Mountain West titles.
Indeed, Mountain West players tend to go under the radar as players who win these awards are usually in the power five conferences. The previous winners of the Maxwell Award played for teams in the SEC and Big 12.
Logan Bonner on Davey O’Brien Award Watchlist
Meanwhile, the Davey O’Brien Award presents a slightly more likely chance Bonner is in the running at the end of the season. Although the winners of the past few decades were all players who played in major conferences, in 1990 and 1991, BYU quarterback, Ty Detmer, won the award in back-to-back seasons.
If Bonner wants to add his name to the list of Maxwell and Davey O’Brien trophy winners, he will most likely need to lead the Aggies to a nearly perfect season. Furthermore, he will need to mimic stats similar to former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. A Mountain West championship two seasons in a row will also be a must.
To add to the resume, a win versus mighty Alabama will increase his national recognition alongside with making him an Aggie Legend.
