On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, the USFL and Hall of Fame Village leaders held a press conference to state that Canton will provide the location for the New Jersey Generals and Pittsburgh Mauler teams. It will host the regular season games and the North Division coming in June as well as the USFL Championship game in the beginning of July.
“The USFL is excited that the Pittsburgh Maulers and the New Jersey Generals will practice and play games in Canton during the 2023 regular season,” said Daryl Johnston, USFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations. “The outstanding regional support we received during our first postseason from football fans in Ohio and Pennsylvania, including the great city of Pittsburgh, coupled with our successful partnership with the Hall of Fame Village, led to the moment.”
In 2022, the New Jersey Generals were led by former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike Riley and finished 9-1 in the regular season. They won the North Division title, but were quickly eliminated in the North Division semifinals to the 6-4 Philadelphia Stars. The overall champions were the Birmingham Stallions led by Skip Holtz (son of former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz).
On the opposite end, the Pittsburgh Maulers finished a disappointing 1-9 with their only win coming against the Houston Gamblers (21-20) in week 5. Prior to the 2023 season, former head coach Kirby Wilson resigned and they hired former NFL Defensive Coordinator and veteran Ray Horton to replace Wilson for 2023.
On Sunday April 23, 2023, the Maulers and Generals will play their first scheduled game. Tickets can be purchased @bit.ly/CantonTix
