College Football: USC football pulled an upset over an SEC team
Late Friday night in Nevada, a touchdown with eight seconds remaining would give the USC Trojans a win over Texas A&M in front of a crowd of 26,671 at the SRS Distribution Bowl at Allegiant Stadium.
Things looked dire for USC midway through the third quarter when Texas A&M defensive lineman Cashius Howell tipped and intercepted a pass quarterback Jayden Maiava’s pass, returning the ball to the USC 9-yard line.
The Aggies would score three plays later to make it a 24-7 ballgame with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter. With USC’s offensive woes up to that point, the Trojans appeared to be on the ropes after surrendering 10 points in one minute.
Texas A&M blew a 17-point lead in the second half
USC would mount a furious comeback on their next possession, scoring a touchdown on a three-play, 71-yard drive. The Trojans would take a 28-24 lead with 4:40 remaining in the fourth, but Texas A&M would regain the lead on a 10-play, 75-yard drive.
With 1:49 on the clock, Maiava would lead USC down the field with ice in his veins, making an almost miraculous pass to Ja’Kobi Lane that would result in a 33-yard gain on third-and-13 from the Aggies’ 46-yard line. The first down would keep USC from having to settle for an extremely long field goal attempt or go for it on fourth down.
Mavia would eventually throw the game-winning touchdown pass to Kyle Ford with eight seconds remaining, giving USC a 35-31 win over Texas A&M.
Per ESPN BET, USC entered the Las Vegas Bowl as 3.5-point underdogs to Texas A&M.
With the win, USC improved to 7-6 on the season. Texas A&M fell to 8-5 to finish 2024 in Mike Elko’s first year as the head coach.
