Urban Meyer is one of the best coaches in college football history, and he knows a lot about offense. Meyer brought his spread option offense to Florida in the mid-2000s, and many people thought it would never work, but after he got his quarterback, Tim Tebow, the offense turned into the best in the game.
Meyer won two titles for the Gators and then went to Ohio State and won another. When Urban Meyer stepped down as the Buckeyes’ head coach at the end of 2018, he named his quarterback coach/offensive coordinator Ryan Day the new head coach.
After five seasons, Ohio State’s head coach Ryan Day made a great change to the offense this year, bringing in UCLA head coach Chip Kelly to call plays and be the team’s offesive coordinator.
Day and Kelly worked together in the past at the college and NFL levels, so there is trust between the two. Kelly is known to have a high-flying tempo offense that loves to run the ball, and Urban Meyer had a lot of praise for the former college head coach.
Urban Meyer Has His Eyes On Chip Kelly
The former Buckeyes head coach was a guest on the sports radio show The Herd with Colin Cowherd, and the two started talking about Chip Kelly’s offense.
Cowherd stated,” Chip loves to run the ball; Chip would run it 70 times a game if he could. I think he is sort of the missing piece for this offense. I think it’s prettier than ever, but I’m not sure if it’s as tough or physical as Urban offenses. ”
Urban Meyer responded with high praise for the former Oregon and UCLA head coach, saying,” He’s the perfect play guy; he’s a guy who’s going to huddle and get the perfect play call.”

Meyer’s high praise for Kelly should excite Ohio State fans. The Buckeyes offense wasn’t exactly exciting last season, even though Marvin Harrison Jr. was the best wide receiver in the sport.
The offense lacked big plays, and much of that was due to quarterback Kyle McCord, who is no longer on the team; now, Will Howard has the chance to be the big-play quarterback the Buckeyes were looking for last season.
Kelly’s offense should be very fun to watch this season, and Ryan Day’s hiring of him was one of the best moves he has made since being named the head coach five years ago.
