People have lost their minds in Columbus, Ohio, after Ohio State lost to Michigan again, making it the fourth straight loss against their arch-rivals.
Beating Michigan is right up there with winning a national championship for any Buckeye head coach, and Ryan Day has done an awful job at doing both of those things.
The 45-year-old has a 1-4 record against Michigan and has never won a championship. If he doesn’t win one this year, it will be six seasons without reaching the program’s biggest goal.
Right now, it feels like Day has to win the title to keep his job, and if he falls short, there is a great chance He will pack his bags and look for work elsewhere.
One name that has come up in the last few days that could replace Day is former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer stepped down from the team in 2018 after spending seven years with the program, never losing to Michigan, and winning a title in the 2014-2015 season.
Would Urban Meyer Come Back To Ohio State?
Meyer was the one to give Day the head coaching job when he left, and there isn’t much of a chance that Meyer would want to even come back and take this job.
College football is different from six years ago when the three-time national champion-winning coach left the sport. Over the past few years, we have seen coaches like Nick Saban step down because they didn’t want to deal with NIL and the transfer portal.
Meyer is one of these old-school coaches who want to be in charge of everything, and he wouldn’t do so well if he lost out on a player because the school couldn’t pay the recruit enough.
It just doesn’t seem likely that Meyer would want to come back and coach a team he already had great success with. Why would he want to ruin his legacy at Ohio State if things go bad if he returns?
Everyone around Columbus looks at Meyer as a legend, but that could be gone quickly if he has a rough season or two and loses to Michigan.
Also, why would anyone want to leave a television job where they make millions of dollars to work at least 16 weekends a year?
Meyer’s return to Ohio State is nothing but a fantasy, and don’t count on it happening. You will be disappointed when it doesn’t come true.
