The UCLA Bruins are one of the newest members of the Big Ten conference. There is a lot of anticipation as to what the Big Ten will look like this season. Because of this, there was a lot of attention on the Big Ten Media Day.
UCLA football head coach DeShaun Foster had a chance to introduce himself to the conference. Let’s just say it did not go well.
DeShaun Foster Has Absolutely Terrible Press Conference
In the video of the Big Ten Media Day press conference linked here, you can listen to DeShaun Foster’s absolutely awful introductory speech. It lasted just one minute and 12 seconds, but you could tell it took all of Foster’s effort just to get to the finish line. Foster had this notable gem in the middle of this brutal speech:
“I’m sure you guys don’t know too much about UCLA but… we’re in LA… it’s us (UCLA) and USC…” -DeShaun Foster
After that, Foster let out a nervous laugh. He then tried to abruptly end the speech by revealing he was excited to be the head coach for the UCLA football team.
UCLA Football Missing Chip Kelly?
What makes this worse is that this is Foster’s first year as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins. On top of this, he is replacing a well-respected head coach in Chip Kelly. He was the UCLA football head coach for six seasons from 2018-2023.
UCLA had a 37-34 record in that stretch. However, Kelly finished his tenure strong, going 25-13 in his last three years as head coach.
Pressure in the Big Ten
The Big Ten is considered one of the strongest conferences in college football. While the old Pac-12 was a solid conference, there is a general consensus that UCLA is taking a step up in competition here.
There are likely going to be questions as to whether UCLA can handle the competition they will be presented from new schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, and more. Foster’s first press conference in the Big Ten is not likely to put more confidence in UCLA as a member of this conference.
We will have to see if Foster has a better presence behind the scenes that reflects the team’s performance on the football field. If not, Foster may have a very brief tenure as the UCLA football head coach.
