The ownership of the Dallas Cowboys lied about being “all-in” (even to keep its core players) for the 2024 season. One of the players it disrespected last season is set to retire with the team on Wednesday.
The Cowboys were able to reach deals with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb before the season started, but the delay in extending those contracts meant Dallas went skimpy in free agency last spring.
Tyron Smith is retiring

They also missed out on re-signing key veterans like cornerback Stephon Gilmore and left tackle Tyron Smith. Per a release by the Cowboys on Tuesday, Smith is expected to retire with Dallas on Wednesday.
“Eight-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith is expected to retire after 14 seasons in the NFL, 13 of which he spent with the Cowboys where he was a two-time All Pro,” per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys. (Except that he was a five-time All-Pro. He was a two-time first-team All-Pro.)
“Smith spent the 2024 season with the New York Jets but is expected to retire as a Cowboy by signing a one-day contract with Dallas on Wednesday, with a press conference scheduled at the Star in Frisco at 2 P.M. CT that’ll be live-streamed on DallasCowboys.com and the Cowboys mobile app.”
The Dallas Cowboys published a bizarre release

In a bizarre release, the Cowboys website made the article about owner Jerry Jones by praising him for drafting Smith and condemning the offensive lineman for being often injured.
“In 2011, Smith was the first offensive lineman that Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since he bought the team in 1989. It paid off,” Yarrish wrote.
“Injuries were always a factor for Smtih in his playing days, but he was always still one of if not the most dominant offensive lineman on the field when healthy. When the NFL released their All-Decades team for the 2010s, Smith was one of the four offensive tackles chosen alongside Jason Peters, Joe Staley and Joe Thomas.”
Smith played three years at USC before the Cowboys drafted him. He finished his playing carer with the New York Jets after the Cowboys front office blamed “inflation” as a reason they couldn’t bring the eight-time Pro Bowl player back.
Smith appeared in 171 games and started in 171. He made the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2011.
