Tyler Shough, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, is still holding out for a fully guaranteed contract with the team. While many can definitely understand what the quarterback is going through, Shough missing training with the rest of the Saints players may actually end up hurting him. Saints inside, Timothy Jones, recently reiterated this in a tweet from his X account.

Shough is definitely a valuable player for the Saints, especially with Derek Carr’s retirement. Carr’s mantle seemed to fall on Shough’s shoulders, and everyone believed that the rookie would soon be crowned starting quarterback. However, with Shough being unable to train, the team might soon look up to Spencer Rattler, who joined the team in the 2024 season.
“If Tyler Shough doesn’t report to Saints training camp due to ongoing contract negotiations, this decision may not be beneficial for him from a competitive standpoint, as he’ll miss valuable practice reps. Additionally, it could strengthen Spencer Rattler’s case for being the starting quarterback. However, I understand his desire to secure the best financial deal possible.” Saints insider, Timothy Jones tweeted from his X account about Tyler Shough.

Tyler Shough is, of course, not the only rookie who is holding out for a better contract with their teams. According to reports, there are 29 others who are also asking for fully guaranteed contracts from their teams. At the same time, there has also been a movement from the team owners themselves, who are not so eager to dole out guaranteed contracts since they end up spending a lot more money.
Tyler Shough’s Contract Holdout Commented On By Justin Reid
On another note, Tyler Shough’s contract holdout brought some diplomatic comments by New Orleans Saints safety, Justin Reid. Reid was asked what he thought about Shough’s contract holdout and whether the starting quarterback role would go to Spencer Rattler.
“We feel it’s a competition. I mean, both guys are getting first-team reps, and you know, it’s about them just making the most of an opportunity.” Justin Reid said to ‘The Sporting News’ about Tyler Shough and the New Orleans Saints.

Justin Reid has been known to play it safe when it comes to media appearances. Of course, the player will be looking out for his own safety and future in the team. However, it is common knowledge that Shough’s career in the New Orleans Saints team might be in trouble before it even can start.
