A key coaching staff member for the Colorado Buffaloes reportedly resigned in August. The shakeup on head coach Deion Sanders’ staff came weeks before the Buffaloes were set to play their first game of the season against North Dakota State on Aug. 29.
A big year for Deion Sanders and his staff
The 2024 season is a huge season for Colorado in Sanders’ second year in charge of the program. Sanders won three more games at Colorado than the 2022 team did. However, the 4-8 finish last season wasn’t anything to brag about after being in the Top 25 in September.
Sanders’ actions and words have put the Buffaloes on the map. But he also knows he’s under pressure in year two to win many games this season, as the Buffaloes have a likely first-round quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft on the team in Shedeur Sanders.
Buffaloes’ Special teams coordinator resigned in August
The Buffaloes had a little drama ensue before the start of training camp. According to Jason Jones of Sports Illustrated, special teams coordinator Trevor Reilly resigned at some point within the previous 12 days:
“Buffaloes football assistant coach Trevor Reilly reportedly resigned before the start of fall camp. Sports Illustrated confirmed with CU’s SID staff that he was no longer with the program.
The former NFL linebacker started his coaching journey at Jackson State with Deion Sanders in 2021 and made his transition to Colorado last year. Reilly was Colorado’s special teams coordinator over the past 20 months. He was at Hawaii Football’s practice with former CU Coach Dennis Thurman on Aug. 9, the same day as CU Media Day. “
A Colorado Buffaloes OC was demoted during the 2023 season
Sanders’ staff is no stranger to sudden changes on the staff. Following the Buffaloes’ eighth game of the season, Sanders demoted offensive coordinator Sean Lewis. Lewis would go on to take the head coaching job at San Diego State University.
Per SI’s report, the Buffaloes have not named Reilly’s replacement.
The report is yet another odd incident in the Sanders era in Colorado.
