As Jacksonville Jaguars mandatory minicamp gets underway, Trevor Lawrence’s contract situation remains a bit of an open question.
The former No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft is due for an extension, but so far this offseason, the two sides have yet to come to terms on a deal, or appear to be all that close to getting anything meaningful done.
But, Lawrence isn’t concerned.
“I have full belief that that’ll take care of itself and that’s not something I need to worry about,” Lawrence told reporters in Jacksonville. “That’s why I pay people and hire people to do that for me. That’s not my job. But obviously, I know what’s going on. I’m aware of the situation — I think that’s important, too — but I try to keep all my focus and energy on being the best player I can be to help us win.”
It would seem that Lawrence’s contract could fall somewhere between the mega-deals signed in recent years by the likes of Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Tua Tagovailoa and the contracts agreed to by Baker Mayfield and Jared Goff this offseason.
Goff and the Lions agreed to a four-year pact worth $212 million last month.
Through three seasons, Lawrence has led the Jaguars to one postseason appearance and playoff victory while completing 63.8 percent of his passes for 11,770 yards with 58 touchdowns to 39 interceptions.
Wherever the two sides land, Goff Lawrence hopes that these talks won’t linger like a dark cloud over training camp in July, let alone the 2024 season kicking off in September.
“Yeah, I think that would be ideal, just to put it behind us and keep moving and feel good about that going into training camp,” he said. “But either way, like I’ve said before, I have the same job. So I can’t always control all those factors, but I have the same job to do either way. But yeah, of course, that’d be ideal to get it done as soon as you can and kinda move forward.”
