The Kansas City Chiefs have a motivated player this offseason. Tight end Travis Kelce is set to return to play for the Chiefs in 2025 after taking some time to decide on retirement.
Kelce returned to play in 2024 because he wanted to battle for a three-peat. Those hopes and dreams were dashed in a 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.
Travis Kelce wants to play at a higher level in 2025

During a recent episode of The New Heights podcast, Kelce said that his goal is to play at a higher level than last season.
“I love playing,” Kelce said. “I still feel like I could play it at a high level and possibly at a higher level than I did last year. I don’t think it was my best outing. I think I let my guys down in a lot more moments than I helped them, especially if you look at my track record and how I’ve been in years past.
“I just, I want to give it a good run. I got a bad taste in my mouth on how I ended the year and how well I was playing and how accountable I was for the people around me. And I love so many people in Kansas City, both in that facility, in the community. And it’s home for me now. And I don’t want to leave that life yet. I put in a lot of hard work and I put in a lot of focus into being the best that I can for KC.”
An obligation to the Kansas City Chiefs

Kelce had his worst production in 2024, catching a career-low three touchdowns and gaining a career-low receiving yards (823). Kelce explained part of his reason for returning in 2025 was to finish out his contract obligation with the Chiefs.
“And last year, it just didn’t end well for us,” Kelce said. “And I just, I feel like there’s a responsibility in me to play out the contract that I initially signed, to give Kansas City and the Chiefs Organization everything that I got. And that’s what I’m gonna do, man.”
The Chiefs had to make a big roster move after Kelce’s decision to return. Kansas City applied the franchise tag to offensive guard Trey Smith, meaning they were over the cap before free agency. The Chiefs traded four-time All-Pro Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears in a cap-cutting move.
Kelce and Thuney were the only two cap casualty candidates for Kansas City this offseason.
Kelce should definitely feel an obligation to the Chiefs for 2025 now.
