Baker Mayfield proved the rumors to be true in recent news and was traded to the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield will join Sam Darnold as the other top three quarterback. With a deal worth $18.8 million and the Panthers covering only $5 million, you could say that the Panthers didn’t do so bad with the negotiation.
Mayfield’s Return After Surgery:
This may be a needed fresh start for Mayfield, as he ended his last season with the Browns due to his shoulder injury that required surgery. According to Joe Person from The Athletic, Mayfield passed his physical and is ready to begin the 2022 season with the Panthers.
This is all good news to Mayfield, as back in April when the Panthers selected Matt Corral, Mayfield’s place in the NFL was in question. Between the uncertainty of teams and waiting to be cleared from his physical, this trade could be a relief for Mayfield.
Give and Take:
Additionally, the Browns will receive a 2024 fifth-round pick according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero from the NFL Network. Mike Garafolo, also from the NFL Network, reports that the fifth-round pick could convert to a fourth-round pick depending on playing time. Likely to be a starter, Mayfield is set to face the Browns in the first week.
Outcome TBD:
Will the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns benefit from this trade? This depends on the Brown’s quarterback situation, as it has been suspected that Deshaun Watson is likely to play in 2022. We will just have to watch and see how Baker Mayfield comes back after his surgery as a Carolina Panther.
