The offseason is the time where LSU is starting to not only work on their roster for the upcoming season in 2023, but starting to put the puzzle pieces together for their future depth chart. Brian Kelly and his staff will be hosting some of the top recruits in the Class of 2025, including the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the class, Bryce Jay Underwood. Underwood has all of the potential to become a valued target for all of the schools around the country for what he has done throughout his high school career. The Tigers will be hoping for a successful visit to Baton Rouge for what can shape up to a big get for the purple and gold.

What The Quarterback Room Looks Like for LSU:

It’s not always easy to look ahead of what could be next for LSU at the quarterback position, but it is always something that should be in the back of our minds. The Tigers will be strong at the position going into the 2023 season as Jayden Daniels announced that he was coming back for another year in Baton Rouge. LSU did lose a key piece in Walker Howard as he entered his name into the transfer portal in the offseason and he is heading to Ole Miss.

That will leave the quarterback room heading into this year for Daniels to be the lead guy and Garrett Nussmeier to be the backup for the upcoming season. After Daniels departs from LSU, Nussmeier will likely be the guy for the next two-three years. Nussmeier was able to redshirt during his freshman season in 2021 and he will be a redshirt sophomore heading into 2023.

After Nussmeier, the door will be open for the quarterback competition. The top names coming from the recent recruiting classes of 2023 and 2024 are Rickie Collins and Colin Hurley. An open competition can leave the door open for another top prospect, like Underwood to come in and become a difference maker for the program.

Underwood has received attention from schools around the country that want to lock up the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2025. During the 2021 season as a freshman, Underwood threw for 2,888 yards, 39 touchdowns. He would also add six rushing touchdowns on the ground. The Belleville, Michigan native would lead Belleville High School to a 13-1 record and the Michigan Division I state championship.

Underwood is expected to be recruited very heavily by most of the top Power Five schools in the nation and according to Allen Trieu of 247Sports, he has all of the intangibles that can a school will be looking for:

“Has a strong arm already with the ability to make throws to any part of the field. Throws a good deep ball and can use touch to give his receivers a chance to go make plays on the ball. Did an exceptional job of taking care of the ball as a freshman with 39 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Got rid of the ball quickly and was decisive with the ball for the most part. Very good athlete who honestly could be a high-level recruit on defense if he was not such a great quarterback. Uses those legs to escape the rush and extend plays. He looks to throw after escaping, but can also take off and be dangerous as a runner.”

Underwood would continue his momentum during his freshman season into 2022 as he finished the year with 2,762 yards and 37 touchdowns. He would continue to be active in the running game as he rushed for 632 yards and eight touchdowns. LSU is one of 30 schools to offer the phenom from the state of Michigan and the sophomore quarterback will be taking his visit to Baton Rouge this weekend.
