During the 2025 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected running back Cam Skattebo in the fourth-round (105th overall) from the Arizona State Sun Devils. Skattebo is one of the reasons why Arizona State went to the college football playoffs during the 2024 college season, and he also almost single-handedly took down the Texas Longhorns in the playoffs.

For now, on the Giants depth chart, he is currently the second running back behind Tyrone Tracy Jr. Tracy for now is projected to be the starting running back for New York. However, could the Giants rookie running back take over as the number one running back before the 2025 NFL season begins?
New York Giants Rookie Running Back Cam Skattebo Turning Heads Already In Training Camp

On Monday during Giants training camp, the rookie running back received reps with the first team offense. The 23-year-old is starting to turn heads. He was very impressive with the way he performed. Dan Duggan, the Giants beat writer for The Athletic said about Skattebo,
“Rookie running back Cam Skattebo took reps with the starting offense for the first time Monday after a string of productive practices. It’s difficult to evaluate long runs in practice since the defense can’t tackle, but Skattebo’s vision is evident as he finds creases and cut-back lanes.
Skattebo’s hands have been his most impressive attribute early in camp. He notched a big gain Monday on a well-blocked screen play. For all of Skattebo’s battering ram highlights in college, he might make his most immediate impact in the passing game.
It remains to be seen how Skattebo’s physical running style will translate to the NFL. The 5-foot-11, 215-pounder appears determined to find out, as he lowers his shoulder and drives his legs through contact with defenders. The edge he plays with is a lock to get on the nerves of defensive teammates because they aren’t allowed to tackle ball carriers to the ground in practice. Veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke drove Skattebo into the ground on a run late in practice.”
During the 2024 season with Arizona State, he rushed for 1,711 yards on 293 carries and 21 touchdowns, along with averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He also caught 45 passes for 605 yards receiving and three touchdowns, along with averaging 13.4 yards per reception. Skattebo is going to be dynamic in the passing game and the ground game for the Giants.
The plan for New York most likely is for Tracy to be the starting running back, but Skattebo will be in the rotation as well. Is there a chance that they could become a pound-and-ground team in 2025? That is something that remains to be seen with the Giants. If Skattebo continues to impress in training camp, then he is going to see the field often as a rookie.
