Linebacker T.J. Watt recently signed a landmark contract extension with the Steelers, as he inked a three-year, $123 million contract deal that included a staggering $108 million fully guaranteed at signing. This new deal made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the history of the NFL, with an average of $41 million annual value. The new contract extension also ended the long-running offseason rumors and solidified his status in the Steelers roster.
How The T.J. Watt Contract Extension Impacts The Bengals
The blockbuster contract extension of T.J. Watt, more than making him the highest-paid non-quarterback player in NFL history, also officially closed any long-running rumors on the future of Watt with the Steelers this offseason.
One particular team that has been affected by this contract extension was the Cincinnati Bengals, who are still locked in contract negotiations with their own Trey Hendrickson.

Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks and posted superior numbers compared to Watt last season, is entering the new season with only a $16 million contract. He has, in the past, expressed his desire to get a substantial raise, to the point of even skipping training camp for it.
With Watt now setting the bar high with his massive contract extension, the Bengals are facing pressure to meet the expectations, or risk losing one of their best defensive assets.

The deal also moved the Bengals’ front office to a corner, as they now must decide whether to offer Hendrickson a market-rate extension of around $35 million a year, or gamble for this season. As Joe Burrow has emphasized, the team’s future may hinge on the roles of Hendrickson alongside stars like Ja’Marr Chase.
As for T.J. Watt, he and the Steelers will seek to follow through and improve on their 10-7 record last season and a deeper playoff run.
