Now that the 2022 NFL Draft is far in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look ahead to the 2023 Draft. Early on, much of the conversation has centered around Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud. And while a few other names have emerged as top level Quarterbacks, some guys have been talked about far too little. Here are three names to keep an eye on as potential risers in next year’s Draft.
Devin Leary, NC State
Devin Leary is a somewhat popular pick for potential “sleeper” Quarterbacks in next year’s draft. He has great accuracy to the short- and intermediate-fields, and shows good zip on throws to those areas. Where he can struggle is consistently showing the touch to place the ball downfield. It usually seemed like his receivers were doing most of the work to turn them into completions. Additionally, he does show a great knack for making throws on the run despite not having much running ability. While he may be considered undersized at 6’1, his 35/5 TD/Interception ratio shows it is not holding him back. If Leary can improve upon his arm strength and touch downfield, he could potentially hear his name called on Friday in April of next year.
Brennan Armstrong, Virginia
Armstrong can best be described as “funky”. He’s a left-handed Quarterback with a fairly unorthodox delivery who shows a developing ability to make plays on the ground. He has solid arm strength and consistent accuracy to all levels of the field, which is especially interesting considering his mechanics are not very refined. Between the air and on the ground, he accounted for 40 TDs, but also 19 turnovers. This speaks to both his ability to make plays, as well as his need to improve his decision making. Altogether, Armstrong is a very interesting prospect with a lot of room to grow. However, when considering his current production was earned through his less than ideal mechanics, it becomes exciting to think what another year of coaching could do for him. Of course, that’s before thinking about what NFL coaching could do for him if he’s given the chance.
Will Rogers, Mississippi State
In terms of production, Will Rogers is not being talked about nearly enough. He finished 1st in completion percentage, 3rd in passing yards, and 7th in passing touchdowns in 2021. While Mike Leach’s pass happy offense does help, this level of production takes serious ability to lead an offense. For reference, Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe was drafted in the 4th round in 2021 with similar levels of production. However, Zappe played in the Conference USA while Rogers plays in the SEC. Producing these numbers requires the arm talent and decision making Rogers shows down after down. While he can improve upon his mobility in the pocket and his consistency in attacking outside the numbers, his current ability to play the position is obvious. Another season like the one he just put up, and there’s no reason why Rogers can’t enter into the Day 1 conversation among Quarterbacks.
